The Magna Project

OUR APPROACH

The Magna Project was approved as a registered Charity (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) by the Charity Commission in October 2024. Our primary aims are in tackling loneliness and isolation and in empowering people to make connections in their local communities. Our initial operating area is within a 20 mile radius of Ludford, Lincolnshire.

The Charity operates for public benefit. It meets the needs of people of all ages and provides skilled volunteers to assist people as companions, empowering and supporting people into new activities, social connections and friendships. It helps people to develop their interests and signposts them to services and opportunities. The Charity also works with schools, colleges and universities on education and research into loneliness.

Loneliness can impact on people for a variety of reasons and through a range of circumstances. It isn’t a mental health condition but it can lead to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety and low self worth. It can lead to the misuse of substances and to a series of unwanted behaviour changes. It can also lead to a variety of physical symptoms. Tackling loneliness also helps in tackling dementia.

Many of us feel lonely from time to time but feelings of loneliness are personal so everyone’s experience will be different. Some people describe loneliness as the feeling we have when our needs for social connection and relationships aren’t met but loneliness isn’t the same as being alone and it doesn’t have to last forever. In our lives, many of us have experienced how good it can feel to talk and share our worries and concerns but also to share the good things in our lives. Our trained volunteers work with clear professional boundaries and our safeguarding policies and know how important it is for people to have a sense of belonging and inclusion.
